Unliving: A sign of things to come?

And so, after weeks and weeks of frustrating silence, Deathknights finally get some update in the latest beta patch. While they are most welcomed, some problems still remained with us; namely Runic Empowerment and boring talents. Hopefully this does not signal the end of the DK changes but rather, a sign of things to come.

Of all trees getting changes, the Unholy tree received the most dramatic tweaking that will make many DKs wet their pants. With having a pet ghoul as one of Unholy's defining ability, our Blizzard overlords have finally implemented talents that allowed for a master and pet synergy.

  • Ravenous Dead has been replaced with Shadow Infusion - When you cast Death Coil, you have a 33/66/100% chance to empower your active Ghoul, increasing its damage dealt by 10% for 30 sec. Stacks up to 5 times.
  • Ghoul Frenzy is now Dark Transformation - Consume 5 charges of Shadow Infusion on your Ghoul to transform it into a powerful undead monstrosity for 30 sec. The Ghoul's abilities are empowered and take on new functions while the transformation is active. / 1 Unholy, 60 yd range, Instant
With these delicious talents, ghouls have effectively become one of our most devastating assets. Its skills have been upgraded as well, giving it more damage as well as added utility:
  • Gnaw becomes - Strike an enemy with a smashing attack, dealing 125% of normal melee damage and stunning for 4 sec.
  • Huddle becomes - Unleash a fortifying roar, reducing all damage taken by 50% for 10 sec.
  • Claw becomes - Rakes an enemy with deformed claws, dealing 150% of normal damage to the target and up to 2 additional targets.
  • Leap becomes - Charge an enemy, interrupting spellcasting and immobilizing them for 2 sec.
I can foresee many of these monstrosities running about in BGs, slaughtering the poor spellcasters.

Effectively, our rotations now centered on letting our ghoul transform into the monstrosity as many times as possible and thus, Death Coiling when our ghoul is normal has become a top priority.

Still, it does not change the fact that Unholy still favor duel wielding due to Sudden Doom. In fact, it is now better than 2H caused by the increased in DCs. Hopefully next patch will see more changes to Deathknights.
